Indigenous Led Partnerships

Strengthening stories, communities, and connections

overview

Since 2004, M1 Agency (formerly Media One) has been invited by Indigenous partners to tell their stories. Our partnerships are built on trust and a shared commitment to strengthening communities through strategic communications. Through this work, we found the language to describe values we've always held—that everything is connected, we respect those connections, and we are committed to taking care of our community and environment. These ways of knowing and being inform all our work, shaping how we approach partnerships across all sectors.

Our Approach

Indigenous communications involves government-to-government advocacy, facilitating inter-Nation communication, and managing complex information flows between Nations, government bodies, and corporate partners. As a pillar of our communications division, we understand that ongoing engagement allows us to tell each community's story effectively.

We bring structure to evolving communication needs—designing websites, producing videos, developing brands, and providing ongoing support on a weekly or monthly basis. Every project is guided by authentic storytelling, stronger community connections, cultural preservation, and capacity building.

Witness Blanket

In 2013, M1 partnered with Kwagiulth and Coast Salish artist Carey Newman to create Picking Up The Pieces: The Making Of The Witness Blanket, a feature documentary following Carey and his team as they collected artifacts and stories from residential schools and residential school survivors across Canada. The film premiered at the Vancouver International Film Festival in 2018.

We also designed a website and app to extend the project's educational reach beyond the Canadian Museum for Human Rights, where the art installation is housed today.

Carey Newman & Taxam Films

In 2016, Carey Newman and M1 partnered to create Taxam Films, an Indigenous led production company. Together, we produced Oaklands Totem, a documentary about an education program centred around a totem pole carving project at Oaklands Elementary. Taxam Films is currently producing Salvaged, a feature documentary set to be released in 2026. M1 has also supported Carey in building his personal website to feature his work.

KA:'YU:'K'T'H' / CHE:K'TLES7ET'H' FIRST NATIONS

In 2015, Kyuquot/Checleseht First Nations (KCFN) engaged M1 to support their vision of rebuilding their Bighouse, a cultural and spiritual landmark lost due to government actions. Since then, our decade long partnership has grown to include website development, ongoing video storytelling, and support for Tiičma Enterprises, the economic arm of the Nations. We've produced over 90 videos during this time, creating a rich archival library that serves the Nation's communications and governance needs. Today, we continue to work with KCFN, supporting each administrative department with their communications goals.

MAA-NULTH TREATY SOCIETY

We began working with the Maa-nulth Treaty Society in 2019 to commemorate the 10-year milestone of the Maa-nulth Treaty, representing Huu-ay-aht, Ka:'yu:'k't'h'/Che:k'tles7et'h', Toquaht, Uchucklesaht, and Yuułuʔiłʔatḥ. Our work includes a website that serves as a central hub for treaty communication and inter-Nation coordination. Our partnership continues through to the 15-year treaty implementation milestone in 2026.

VICTORIA NATIVE FRIENDSHIP CENTRE (VNFC)

We partnered with the VNFC to design and build their website, creating a modern platform that reflects their mission and values. We commissioned local Indigenous artists to create custom artwork for use across the website and digital channels, with each artist creating seven unique pieces.

Our collaboration has extended beyond the initial launch. We continue to work with VNFC on a monthly basis, keeping their website up-to-date and producing video content that captures events and supports their communications.

KNIT | WUTTH’ELS COWICHAN SWEATERS

Founded by the VNFC in 2023, Knit preserves Indigenous artistry while ensuring fair wages for Coast Salish artisans. It is through our relationship with VNFC that we partnered with Knit to build their fashion brand and business. We developed their branding, logo design, and website with e-commerce functionality, and created lifestyle photography that captures each sweater.

Our ongoing partnership includes support for launch events and campaign strategies that amplify their message of cultural preservation and social impact.

SȾÁUTW̱ FIRST NATION (TSAWOUT)

M1 began working with Tsawout First Nation in 2021, initially supporting fundraising efforts for their Bighouse. Since then, our partnership has grown to provide ongoing communications support across their administrative departments. We produce video content for various needs, including documentation of their Indigenous Protected and Conserved Area (IPCA) work and Reef Net restoration project, working closely with each department to meet their specific communications goals and capturing events.

BRIDGING THE GAP BETWEEN NATIONS AND INDUSTRY

We've documented collaborative projects between First Nations and industry partners, including wildfire prevention and management efforts in Nuxalk Territory, a sustainable forestry initiative between Nuxalk Forestry, VIFM, and Probyn Log, and innovations in log salvage operations with Island Timber.

MOOSEHIDE CAMPAIGN

M1 met Moosehide Campaign founder Paul Lacerte through our work on the Witness Blanket. Founded by Paul and his daughter Raven, Moosehide is a grassroots movement that began in Victoria and has grown into a national campaign standing against violence towards Indigenous women and children.

M1 first engaged with Moosehide in 2022 to capture the annual solidarity walk, and we continue to support the organization each year through video documentation.

UVIC LIBRARY

M1 started working with Ry Moran during the making of the Witness Blanket, when he was Executive Director for the National Centre for Truth and Reconciliation. In 2025, we partnered with Ry to create this video for UVic, exploring the meaning and importance of land acknowledgements as an essential reconciliation practice—encouraging intentional engagement rather than performative gestures.

Partnership

Our work has helped Nations and Indigenous organizations strengthen communications, build digital infrastructure, and share stories locally and nationally. The impact is reflected in long-standing partnerships, capacity building within Nations, and stories that continue to educate, inspire, and connect people across generations.
